a little about Winter Hatches from their site.
Looking for somewhere to flyfish in the dead of winter?
Is the corner of Bathurst and Lawrence close enough?

As with most fish, flyfishers can't live long out of water...so here's how to "stay wet" in Toronto between fishing seasons: meet with us at the Winter Hatches Flyfishing Club. Through the fall and winter, our club anglers gather to share tips, tactics, and talk about trips. We always welcome new people, whether you're an old pro or just a beginner. Come and see for yourself. Visitors are welcome.
Link for more info.

I will post more as the meetings progress.
Great group of folks these hatchlings.
Cheers.

You know what I really like is the way you dressed the grub. :D
Do you just tie in the hackle and cement it down and thread the grub on a long shank?
Looks like a deadly trolling fly.
Nice.

Being self taught for the most part I have some perpetual bad casting habits.
It was interesting to learn some of the causes of Repetitive strain injury (RSI).
Now I can work on correcting some areas for health reasons and it may overall fix some casting Faux pas.

Fly Tying for Dummies with John Mangold
November 26 Fly Tying night.

What we tied. This simple but nice looking pattern gave John the opportunity to show some basic tying techniques.
You always learn something.

I liked how John used scale to demo some things we don't normally observe.
Here he is doing a whip finish but using rope and a dowel to show what is happening with the tying thread.
wing.jpg

With a few steps you had a decent fly to take home.
Blackhands.jpg

I sat beside the master himself MR.William Gerrard
He approaches every fly with a real sense of professionalism. I truly do not think he can tie a bad fly but in true humble form he would argue otherwise.
If you ever get the chance check out Williams beginner tying course.

In closing I will ad this. I have always liked iconic flies that symbolize fly fishing.
The kind you find on a cookie tin or Thermos®.
This is one of those flies Thanks John for a great tying night.
